It’s no secret that I am a huge Haruki Murakami fan. I read and reviewed 1Q84 last year, I wrote about magical realism during Armchair BEA, and you may remember my post about the fond memories I have surrounding Norwegian Wood.
You’ve heard me say this before, but The Elephant Vanishes is a great introduction to Murakami’s writing. These stories were written throughout the 1980’s, five of which were published in The New Yorker prior to being compiled in this collection. Within The Elephant Vanishes you’ll find “The Wind-up Bird And Tuesday’s Women,” which was later revised to become the first chapter of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle; “On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning,” which was read on an episode of This American Life; and my personal favorite, “TV People,” which sparked my interest in Murakami’s work.
So, for this Literary Giveaway Blog Hop, I can’t think of a better title to give to one of my readers than the great Haruki Murakami’s The Elephant Vanishes.
