Sunday Salon

Eating // We spent time at a friend’s condo on the beach yesterday, enjoying the beautiful view and relaxing in the water. He made us crab cakes using a recipe from Jim Sterba’s memoir Frankie’s Place. I’m not a huge fan of seafood unless it’s sushi, but you guys, this recipe is to die for. So tasty!

Listening // I’ve been on a Marian McPartland kick lately. We have Amazon Echo so it’s really easy to say, “Alexa, play music by _____.” Which also means, C has me listening to the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic soundtrack pretty often, too. (I have to admit, Twilight Sparkle’s singing voice is really pretty).

Watching // C spent the night with her grandparents Friday night, so we took the opportunity to catch up on a few season 5 episodes of The Walking Dead. We’re in Alexandria now, and enjoying the change of pace.

Playing // We’ve been playing tabletop games a lot more often lately. Zombie Dice and Munchkin Treasure Hunt are two of C’s favorites. At game night at the library Thursday, we learned to play a dice game called Age of War. And yesterday we bought Dungeon Roll, which we haven’t had a chance to try yet, but have heard it’s a lot of fun.

Reading // I’ve decided to shelve a couple books that I don’t seem to want to read, even though I’m enjoying them (such a strange feeling, to enjoy a book yet not be in the mood to read it). I’m currently reading Alice in Wonderland and will be discussing it with The Socratic Salon on August 6. It’s a super quick, trippy read, so if you want to join us there’s plenty of time!

I’m not sure what I’ll pick up next. I have a couple library books and a handful of ARCs I’m eager to try, so there are plenty of choices!

  • I’m hoping to start Alice tomorrow! Sounds like you had a great weekend 🙂

  • I’m going to look into some of those board games you mentioned! My husband and I enjoy games like that, but our collection right now is pretty much aimed at the under 8 set.

  • Three cheers for moving on when books just aren’t doing it. I think we all need a reminder to take that advice once in a while.

  • I love crab cakes, but they can be so hit or miss (miss = tons of filler)…those look yummy and glad you enjoyed some seafood! Alice in Wonderland sounds fun!

  • Those crab cakes look delicious! I’m hoping to get a chance to pick up Alice in Wonderland before the Socratic Salon discussion. It’s been a long time since I last read it.

  • I love that you are listening to My Little Pony songs, via your daughter; I still can’t believe they’re popular…AGAIN! I loved My Little Pony – ha! Those crab cakes look amazing; there’s a fine line between mushy and disgusting and fabulous and the recipe has to be just right. It sounds like you found a winner! Hope your week is off to a great start, Monika!

  • I LOVE tabletop games! Munchin is so much fun. Have you played Dominion before? It’s one of my recent favourites.

I hope you enjoy Alice in Wonderland! It’s the perfect time to read it, being it’s 50th anniversary. There are so many beautiful editions out for this year!

Just wanted to comment to say thank you: I found your blog when googling, and used your How to Create Drop-Down Menus in Blogger post to create my own. So helpful, and so easy to follow! Thanks! 🙂
